Maselimo Mokhomo’s leap into business ownership 

Maselimo Mokhomo’s journey from Lesotho in Southern Africa to Australia is not just a tale of geographical relocation but also one of professional evolution and personal growth. As a passionate audiology professional and now partner with Specsavers, she embodies the spirit of adventure and commitment to excellence.

Maselimo describes herself as someone who loves travelling and being around people, always eager to explore new cultures and cuisines. This love for exploration and connecting with people is evident in her professional journey as well.

Born and raised in Lesotho, Maselimo pursued a Bachelor of Science in Audiology at the University of Cape Town. Her choice of career was driven by a combination of her passion for healthcare and her fascination with technology. “Audiology was a good fit for me as I find satisfaction in providing solutions to communication barriers,” she explains.

Her career began with an opportunity to work alongside a brilliant ENT specialist in a hospital back home, an experience that solidified her dedication to audiology. “I saw the value of teamwork in empowering people who have a hearing loss,” she says. This experience highlighted the importance of collaboration in healthcare, a value she found mirrored in the Specsavers’ approach.

Maselimo understands that hearing loss is a deeply personal and often challenging experience. “Hearing loss can be difficult to accept; it’s crucial to empathise and genuinely walk this journey with people so that they feel cared for and easily navigate support strategies,” she says. Her approach is one of understanding, ensuring that her patients feel supported every step of the way.

A bold step into business ownership

When the opportunity to become a partner with Specsavers presented itself, Maselimo admits she initially found the idea a little daunting. “Firstly, I thought it was a crazy idea and that it was bigger than me due to my limited knowledge of business,” she confesses. However, she was up for the challenge, seeing it as an opportunity for personal and professional growth.

She soon realised that joining Specsavers was a natural progression for her. “Joining Specsavers was easy after I got over that initial feeling, due to their ethics and values. I felt it was a safe space to challenge myself knowing I would be supported,” she says.

The process of becoming an Audiology partner at Specsavers Ballina and Lismore involved engaging with the recruitment team, participating in webinars, and completing tasks to meet the requirements. Throughout this journey, Maselimo was impressed by the unwavering support she received from Specsavers. “I have been humbled by their professional support throughout this journey as moving countries can be challenging,” she says.

Her induction into the company provided a comprehensive introduction to all facets of the business, equipping her with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed. “The induction was great. Not only was it a resourceful foundation on this journey but also a great reference in daily clinical experience,” she explains. 

Maselimo’s experience with Specsavers has reinforced her belief in the company’s mission and values. “I am convinced it’s a place that aims to develop professionals and help them reach their best potential,” she says.

As she settles into her new role, Maselimo is full of optimism for the future. Her goals for her store are ambitious yet grounded in her commitment to excellent customer service. On a personal level, she looks forward to continuing her journey of growth.
