A bright future in Audiology with Specsavers
31 January 2025

Eugene Chang, a dedicated audiologist with a passion for health sciences, recently embarked on a new chapter in his professional journey by joining Specsavers as an Audiology Joint Venture Partner. With a background in science and audiology, Eugene’s career has been marked by a deep commitment to improving the lives of those with hearing impairments.
Outside of his professional life, Eugene is a devoted father of three girls and a loving husband. He finds joy in watching movies and playing the guitar and has a love for heading away and camping with friends.
Eugene’s journey into audiology was driven by his interest in health sciences and the unique opportunity audiology presents in delivering essential healthcare services. He began his career working with both paediatric and adult rehabilitation customer and over the years, he gained extensive experience in adult rehabilitation with various private hearing care providers.
His decision to join Specsavers was fuelled by a desire to be part of a service that is accessible to a wide range of consumers. “Specsavers offered a high-quality service that was available at an accessible price for consumers, with a business model that offered both independence and support,” he says. “This balance of independence and support, combined with the opportunity to deliver affordable hearing care, made Specsavers an attractive choice.”
Eugene’s journey to becoming a partner with Specsavers was not without its challenges, but the support he received from the Specsavers team made the transition smooth. “The network of support available from Specsavers has been excellent, from clinical support to managerial support to payroll and IT. There is an attitude of wanting to support each other, which has been really positive,” he says.
His initial scepticism about whether Specsavers truly prioritised customer needs quickly dissipated during his induction phase. “I wondered initially if putting customers’ needs first was real or if it was just good corporate speak. I have since found that putting customers’ needs first is a pervasive and important value that is core to our purpose,” he says.
Eugene believes that the Specsavers model works because it is both smart and efficient. By leveraging the optical store’s database, Specsavers can effectively target individuals with hearing concerns, offering them options and education to improve their hearing health. “Integrating hearing screenings into the optical pre-test for those over 50 years is smart. Providing high value, low-cost options, particularly in a market where cost of living issues are important, is good business, and offers value that is hard to walk away from,” says Eugene.
The appeal of partnership
For Eugene, the decision to become a Specsavers partner was rooted in the balance of support and independence the partnership offers. “The Specsavers partnership offers a balance of support and independence and excellent marketing penetration. To me, it represents a great opportunity and security for the future,” he says. This opportunity allows him to grow his business while ensuring that customer care remains at the forefront of his practice.
What the future holds
As Eugene continues to grow his business at Specsavers Keysborough, located in a busy shopping centre in Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs, his goals are clear. He aims to grow his business profitably enough to hire an audiology assistant and retain dividends. The highlight of his journey so far has been working with a team that genuinely cares about people, making his work even more enjoyable.
Eugene’s experience with Specsavers has been overwhelmingly positive, and he encourages other audiology professionals to consider partnership opportunities. “The Specsavers partnership offers a unique blend of independence, support, and excellent business opportunities. It’s a model that not only works but also makes a meaningful difference in the lives of our customers,” he says.
