Why I joined a regional store – Ginny Lannigan

Ginny Lannigan is Specsavers Audiology’s 84th partner, joining us this month when she opened her Albany business in WA. Ginny’s store is located more than 400km away from Perth. She tells us what she loves about working in a regional area, how Specsavers Audiology’s ethics resonated with her and advice for anyone considering a store outside of the metropolitan area.

1. What made you want to join Specsavers Audiology?

I joined Specsavers Audiology because I wanted to be able to offer people a great service and a variety of hearing aids at a better price. I felt like it was the best decision for me ethically as I had found myself thinking about where I would want a family member to go for their hearing aids and it always came back to Specsavers. I had also talked to other partners and having the challenge of both the clinical work and running a business was something that I was ready for.

2. Did you always want to join a regional Specsavers Audiology store? If so, why? If not, what convinced you?

Yes, I’ve been living and working in regional WA for about four years now and don’t have any plans to leave. When the opportunity for Albany arose, I knew if it wasn’t going to be me it would be someone else and I didn’t want to miss out.

3. What do you see as the benefits of working in a regional location?

The relationships you build with people are a real benefit, you get to know people well and I think it improves the level of care you can provide. You often know exactly where / what customers are talking about during appointments so you can make any adjustments or recommendations more specific for them which is always appreciated. In the store, you’re working with smaller teams so can get to know them quicker, which makes it easier to settle in.

4. What do you see as being the biggest differences between working in a metro store vs your store?

Again, I think it is the people, they aren’t in such a rush and are happy to spend the time with you. People can also have travelled hundreds of kilometres to see you so there’s always a good variety of customers.

5. Could you ever see yourself wanting to work in a metro location? Why / why not?

Not now, I have fallen in love with Albany and the community here. I also don’t think I could ever go back to the long commute times in the city!

6. What advice would you give someone who may be considering joining a regional store?

If you have been thinking about it, look in to it. There’s no harm in asking questions and making sure you’re making an educated decision. Opportunities like Specsavers don’t come up in regional Australia often so it is something that is worth considering. Also talk to the optical partners, they’ve often been in the same position at some stage and can give you the first-hand advice on what it’s like working in the store and their experience.
