Why I joined a regional Specsavers store – Susan Kirkham

Susan Kirkham is Specsavers Audiology’s 39th partner, operating out of the Mt Barker and Murray Bridge stores in regional South Australia. Susan joined Specsavers Audiology with a desire to deliver strong customer service and explains what attracted her to the model, what she loves about being based regionally and advice on making the most out of your local community.

1. What made you want to join Specsavers Audiology?

I initially joined Specsavers Audiology because I wanted to bring better technology at a lower price point to my customers, whilst also delivering the best possible service. For me, it really does come down to the customer and how to give them the assistance and support they deserve. Given I know Specsavers is famous for that service, that’s what really made it stand out to me.

2. Did you always want to join a regional Specsavers Audiology store? If so, why? If not, what convinced you?

No, not always. When the opportunity arose, I thought it would be great to be a part of a regional location store. I had worked in regional locations previously and I grew up in a country area myself just a few hours outside Adelaide, so I’ve always known how important it is to get specialist services out to those areas.

3. What do you see as the benefits of working in a regional location?

The benefits are definitely the customers, given they don’t have to travel as far to get appointments and to seek help. Being able to have a further reach as well is great. It’s also a really tight-knit community and everyone is friendly. It’s also nice not having to commute to work every day either.

4. What do you see as being the biggest differences between working in a metro store vs your store?

It’s definitely the people. I love the country feel and the country attitude. Because it is a small community, I really get to know my customers. I love hearing about their lives, their family and where they work.

5. Could you ever see yourself wanting to work in a metro location? Why / why not?

I don’t think I could see myself working in a metro area. I’ve always loved the outskirts of Adelaide and as I’m from the country myself I think I click well with country people and love the community feel.

6. What advice would you give someone who may be considering joining a regional store?

Make sure to get involved in the community through sports and social groups. It’s a great way to meet new people and get to know the people you live and work with. Building strong relationships around the community will make your business a standout amongst locals.
